Carlos Herrera, Former Director of Philanthropy

Growing up in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Carlos Herrera saw first-hand how having physical and mental health challenges was detrimental to his community and the lives of those around him. Throughout his years, he has educated himself on positive health practices that have helped him live a fuller life and advocates that others prioritize their health as well, saying, "You have first to help yourself before you can help others." Carlos continues to live and work in Elizabeth and is involved in his community as a professional in the nonprofit sector. A first-generation American and first-generation college graduate, he wants to help others live up to their full potential by helping them find opportunities to lead, learn, and live fully. He joined Project Run For after being approached by Akeem Miller, who saw a desire to help the younger generation find ways to live healthier lives and inspire others to do the same.

Carlos Herrera received his Bachelor of Public Administration degree at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, and is currently a Master of Public Administration degree candidate at Rutgers University - Newark. A bilingual professional with more than nine years in the nonprofit and public sector, Carlos is interested in health and social services, community development, and urban communities. He currently serves as a Board of Trustees member for Project Run For and its Director of Finance and Director of Philanthropy.

"You don't set out to build a wall. You don't say, 'I'm going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that's ever been built.' You don't start there. You say, 'I'm gonna lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid,' and you do that every single day, and soon you have a wall."
